How can we embrace flux & the uncertainty it brings? (Ebru. Origami. Gestalt.)

The Gift

Each of the origami masu boxes you see is comprised of two pieces of paper. Each is individually printed in the ebru tradition by painting on water first, before transferring the pattern to the paper. The papers are then matched to complement or contrast each other. So many variables affect the outcome that no two designs can ever be alike. Accepting that as an outcome can be challenging. Inside, the box is divided into quarters.

When a box is gifted to someone, I invite them to participate in the following way:

"This box is as unique as you. Its complex exterior will wear & change, continually inviting reappraisal and reappreciation. In contrast, the interior is hidden to everyone but yourself. You’re invited to consider the following and use the box as both object of containment and reflection. It can be a curated mix of the permanent, temporary or otherwise. Fill it with meaning, as you would fill yourself. You might include:

  • A handwritten word, lyric, phrase or sentence that holds significance
  • An object that touches you or captures your essence
  • An image that affords reflection
  • A treasure: tangible or intangible

In business, the containers can be used to reflect on personal reactions to: Resilience. Challenge. Change & Progress.
